Bangladesh:- A ferry carrying over 50 passengers crashed after colliding with a cargo vessel in the Shitalakshya River on the outskirts of Dhaka on Sunday, killing at least six people and leaving dozens more missing.

A boat carrying over 50 passengers overturned on Sunday after being hit by a cargo vessel on the Shitalakshya River on the outskirts of Bangladesh’s capital, killing at least six people and leaving others missing.

Officials claimed the MV Afsar Uddin, which had at least 50 passengers on board and was on its route to Munshiganj, sunk after being struck by the MV Ruposhi-9 at 2:20 p.m. on Sunday in the Syedpur Al Amin Nagar region.

Following the disaster, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), along with the river police, navy, and coast guard, began rescue efforts in the region.

“So far, six bodies have been recovered, three of them women.” The search for the missing people is underway, according to a fire department officer reported by the private Independent TV channel.

According to another official, numerous more people are believed to have drowned, with some of them perhaps trapped within the ship.

Bangladesh, The little ferry appeared in front of an oncoming big cargo ship, which dragged it ahead a few yards before sinking swiftly, according to video footage that went viral on social media and was broadcast on TV networks.

Nearly 20 passengers were observed jumping from the launch ferry, and some were able to swim ashore or were rescued by surrounding vessels.

Narayanganj district administration officials said fire service divers launched the search campaign with volunteers in the neighbourhood immediately and they were subsequently joined by coast guard personnel.

A ferry sank in Dhaka in June last year after a collision with another vessel, killing at least 32 people.
